«Despiértate!», vuelven a decir.

From France
She is the main singer and makes Collection d’Arnell-Andréa sound so distinctive with a touch of melancholy.
Collection d’Arnell Andréa is a Darkwave band founded by Jean-Christophe d’Arnell (main composer, writer, piano/keyboards), Pascal Andréa, and Chloé St Liphard in 1986. Andréa left the band shortly after its founding, before its first performance. However, d’Arnell left Andréa’s name in the band name.
Their music features proeminently keyboards, cello, and Chloé’s vocals. The band is known for including a large collection or ensemble of musicians in its live performances and has performed at numerous international music festivals including Germany ‘s Wave-Gotik-Treffen . Many of their albums have focused on late 19th and early 20th century themes.
Here´s an exclusive interview for Creepy Insight:
> How did you first get interested in music? What were your favourite bands, the ones that influenced your musical career? Are you still emotionally attached to these bands?
As far as I remember, I’ve always been listening to a lot of music… classical music at first probably because I used to practice piano (Chopin, Mahler, Ravel, Debussy and all the French Melodies of Duparc, Fauré….); later I kept on listening to classical music but I began to discover some “alternative” or “electronic” stuff: Clash, Cramps, Tuxedo Moon, Minimal Compact, Bauhaus, Joy Division, Christian Death…..
And now, I am still deeply emotionally attached to old bands like: Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins or even Joy Division (we recently recorded a cover of Isolation, for a tribute, on a French label called Infrastition!).
Collection d’Arnell-Andrea’s story had already begun, when I discovered Dead Can Dance for the first time, but of course, their vision of music (artwork, and dark atmospheres) deeply influenced us, and, in a certain way authorised us to continue on the personal way we choose to make music at this time.
As you know, CDAA at the beginning, was often compared to DCD… there weren’t many bands (especially in France ) trying to produce a music based on a female voice, with very dark atmospheres and a very dark artwork!
> Where could you find music/records? Was it difficult to get good music?
At the end of 80′s I used to buy records (vinyls) from little and independent record shops…like anyone! I read some underground fanzines, and that was the best way to discover some original music. I also made some tape compilations to exchange with friends.
> Did you go to concerts? Tell me about the people, the vibe. Was there attrition between the different sub cultural groups?
Of course I always used to go to many concerts: OMD, Virgin Prunes, Cocteau Twins, dead Can Dance, New Order…
The underground world could seem very small, but it was also really active: fanzine, small labels, radios gathered together always the same persons!!
I still really appreciate to go to concerts now: Nine Inch Nails(I really like their music !), Radiohead (twice…), VNV nation, Tindersticks….
> When did you start/join the band?
Nearly from the beginning! I was present on the stage for the first concert in 1986! CDAA was the support band for The Appartments , for a concert in Tours ( France .
> How do you describe your music/what are your songs about?
The main theme of all our records, is probably the past, the nostalgia I feel for the past…..and the particular relationship between the human feelings and the Nature (wind, landscapes, woods, seas, Autumn and so on…)
Our music is the result of the collaboration between different influences, different people coming from classical area (alto, cello) and more “underground” backgroud…
We’ve always been trying, from the beginning, to mix different sounds, or instruments, to get a kind of universal music, in a universal emotion language: electronic keyboards, rhythm box, and acoustic instruments (cello, viola, piano)
My voice, and probably the way I sing, much contribute to CDAA’s own musical language. We also choose to integrate the lyrics with a poetry form, a little “old-fashioned” some times, but always the more coherent possible with the different concepts of the albums!
> Do you receive different treatment for being a woman musician?
Really difficult to answer this question! All the relationships between the musicians are really friendly, especially in this kind of underground music! So I’m not sure that a woman particularity really exists!
The record companies, and the other bands in this kind of music (darkwave, gothic) have the conscience, in a certain way, to belong to the same “family”.
And I also think, that CDAA, like main of the other bands, has always tried to stay close to fans, or journalists; it’s easy to meet the band after the concerts!
> Did you fit in, within the music scene, or have you encountered some barriers? What has been your biggest challenge as a band/musician?
No I haven’t really encountered some barriers… our biggest luck was probably to make our first record (4 tracks EP) with a small English label in 1988; this attention payed to our music, at the beginning, contributed to give us all the confidence we need at this time! Later, the famous french label New Rose / Lively Art started to have faith in our music… One of our biggest “challenges” was probably, our first concert in London , in the mythical Rock Garden: we were young and really impressed to play music on the stage where Bauhaus had played a few years before!
> Do you believe that music, as we know it, will continue to exist? The de-objectification (?!) of the record, the sub-cultures risen from the ashes, will they endure, and contribute with maybe something new, or just mimic?
The de-objectification of the record is engaged but I think that a new “underground” culture has already started to rise…it’s just the beginning! Of course it’s sometimes difficult to admit the end of the material support, especially when you are, like me, very attached to the artwork of the records!
For CDAA, the artwork really belongs to the record; we pay a great attention to the coherence between the design of the record and the general concept of the music.
> Weirdest situation on stage /The best gig was
Maybe our first concert in Leipzig (Wave Gotik Treffen): we had asked for a minimum of lights on the stage because we wanted the movies we project on the back of the scene to be seen by the audience, that’s was our priority; and when we started to play, there was a total obscurity on the stage…really weird indeed! So I asked the technicians for a little more light, and then we all discovered that the venue was really full of people (about 1500!).
If this concert were also a very nice one, my others “best gigs” could be our first concert as a chamber music orchestra (piano, cello, viola and voices) in Paris (Caves St Sabin) and more recently another concert acoustic in Orleans (Salle de l’Institut): in a very beautiful old theatre from the 19 th century!
> With whom would you like to play
With Brendan Perry and Trent Reznor! from the ethereal to the industrial…
> A tough one, what’s your favourite albums/books/movies ever
“Les ailes du désir” (Win Wenders) ; “Le bannissement (Andreï Zviaguintsev)
« Crime et châtiment” (Dostoïevski) and any book from Virginia Woolf…
“Treasure” (Cocteau Twins), “Within the realm of dying sun” (DCD) and a lot of other ones!!! PJ Harvey, Radiohead, NIN….
> A time machine, the best concert would be
A concert of Bauhaus in Berlin or “le sacre du printemps” (Stravinski) for its creation in Paris !
> Plans for the future
A concert in Leiria the 28 th august… We are really excited because this concert will be the first one in Portugal !
We are also keeping on mixing a new album….
